D’Angelo Lovell Williams

Exhibition: D’Angelo Lovell Williams, Extensions

Dates: March 23 – May 4, 2019

Higher Pictures is pleased to present Extensions by D’Angelo Lovell Williams. This is the artist’s third solo exhibition with the gallery.

In a series of six meticulously composed photographs, Williams expands on his previous self-portraits by examining the intimacy of kinship: how one is linked (often physically) to mothers, ancestors, friends, and lovers alike. The artist communicates in a visceral visual language that transmutes the human form into something mesmerizing and uncanny. He conjoins bodies, contorting them into physical glyphs—a shared piece of gum stands in for an umbilical cord, just as a face protruding from the fabric of a dress evokes pregnancy and siblinghood. The result is as fluid as the dance-like motions that Williams performs.

D’Angelo Lovell Williams (b. 1992) earned his BFA from Memphis College of Art in 2015 and his MFA from Syracuse University in 2018. He is a recent graduate of Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and a recipient of the En Foco Photography Fellowship. Recent solo presentations include Higher Pictures (2017 and 2018); Spark Contemporary Art Space, Syracuse (2016); and Beauty Kings (2015), SALTQuarters Gallery, Syracuse. His work was also on view in Colour Somewhere, Lipscomb University, Nashville (2019); Gendered, The Mint Museum, Charlotte (2017); and Queering Space, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven (2016). Williams lives and works in Los Angeles.
