D’Angelo Lovell Williams, The Independent, New York

Higher Pictures presents photographs and weavings made between 2020 and 2023 by D’Angelo Lovell Williams, the artist’s first solo presentation at an art fair.

D’Angelo Lovell Williams’s first gallery show was at Higher Pictures in the Summer of 2017. Roberta Smith wrote of it in The New York Times: “The 10 reverberant color photographs in D’Angelo Lovell Williams’s show at Higher Pictures form one of the year’s best gallery debuts.”

Over the six years since, Higher Pictures has held three more solo exhibitions with the artist. At the height of the Covid pandemic in 2020 when the gallery relocated from 980 Madison Avenue to its current space at 16 Main Street in Brooklyn, D’Angelo curated the inaugural group exhibition titled We Wear the Mask. In 2022 the Lumber Room in Portland, Oregon presented a collaborative exhibition, The Quick, with Diedrick Brackens and D’Angelo Lovell Williams. That same year D’Angelo’s first monograph, Contact High, was published by MACK. All this before the artist turned 30!

D’Angelo’s work is included in the following collections: The Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Lumber Room, Portland, Memphis Brooks Museum, The Studio Museum Harlem, Tate Modern and The Whitney Museum of American Art.
