Travess Smalley

Art in America

Travess Smalley’s photo-collages manifest overlapping processes of digital and physical manufacture. In Smalley’s work, cutting and pasting means both an operation done with scissors and glue and a function for manipulating images in Photoshop. The modestly-scaled, brightly-colored works have a restless quality, as if they are frozen stills from an endless loop running between the screen and the page and back again.
