Dakota Mace

Dakota Mace (Diné, b.1991) earned her MA and MFA in Photography and Textile Design at the University of Wisconsin-Madison after receiving her BFA in Photography from the Institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Her practice is process driven, connecting the material she uses to her familial heritage. Drawing from Diné philosophy, Mace’s practice builds from several methods of analog techniques to push an understanding of Diné culture. Her recent shows include Locus of a Gesture, Filter Photo, Chicago (2026, curated by Kristie Kahns); Hold This Earth, Yorkshire Sculpture Park, West Bretton, UK (2026); Dahodiyinii–Sacred Spaces, SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico (2025, curated by Brandee Caoba); A Tale of Today, Driehaus Museum, Chicago (2025, curated by Giovanni Aloi); Trust Me, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York (2024, curated by Kelly Long); Captured Earth, Museum of Contemporary Photography (MoCP) (2024, curated by Kristin Taylor). Dakota primarily lives and works in Madison, WI.
