Other dealers nominated some remarkably diverse favorites, a sign of
the great range of photography on view in the past 12 months. Leo
Rubinfien's Wounded Cities at the Corcoran Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C., got Robert Mann's vote: "Suspending enormous, naked
prints by wires from its towering ceilings was incredibly effective and
unforgettable, and how appropriate it was to be hanging when the
Corcoran hosted one of Obama's inauguration parties!" Brian Clamp was
dazzled by Hiroshi Sugimoto's 7 Days / 7 Nights at Gagosian
Gallery in Chelsea, observing, "It was just as much about the
installation and the experience as it was about the artwork." The
William Kentridge show at SFMOMA was Catherine Edelman's highlight of
the year. Rick Wester was especially moved by the photographs of LaToya
Ruby Frazier documenting herself and her family at New York's Higher
Pictures, while Sid and Michelle Monroe of Santa Fe selected Eddie Adams: Vietnam
at the Umbrage Gallery in DUMBO. The International Center of
Photography exhibition of another legendary American photographer,
Richard Avedon, was the favorite of Etheleen Staley. Myoung Ho Lee's
Tree at Yossi Milo Gallery was the highlight for Darren Ching of
Klompching Gallery.
