More evidence that photography is a medium in furious flux, this
super-savvy show brings together work by seventeen contemporary
artists ”all women” who challenge the notion of the photograph as
straightforward document. A few names (Yamini Nayar, LaToya Ruby
Frazier, Talia Chetrit, Jessica Eaton) might be familiar, but most are
new, and none of these artists are afraid to mess with the medium. Among
the many standouts, Letha Wilson obscures her color photographs of cliched Western landscapes with layers of cement, Aspen Mays
hole-punches the stars out of found images of nighttime skies, and Erica
Allen tweaks generic barbershop portraits to new levels of unreality.
Through July 9.
