In the few years it's been open, Higher Pictures' parlor-room space has become a must see on any Upper East Side gallery tour. At the moment, Claire Pentecost's black-and-white photographs of pencil drawings made on studio and apartment walls and adorned with things like flower petals, pushpins, and plastic body parts are on view there, and they're little thresholds to imaginative worlds. This is funny-strange work, part healing ex-voto offering, part phantasmagorical spell, often wry and almost always filled with an intricate, transporting crypticness.
